What a Players Association Certified Agent Actually Does

If you are a player heading toward the professional level, you will hear a lot about agents. In the NFL, NBA and MLB, the agents who negotiate player contracts are certified by the players association for that league. Here is what that certification means and what a certified agent actually does.

What certification means

Players associations (the NFLPA, NBPA and MLBPA) are the unions that represent players in each league. Because the union is the players’ exclusive bargaining representative, it controls who may negotiate individual player contracts on a player’s behalf. Each association sets its own regulations for agents, which can include application requirements, background checks, examinations, continuing education, fee limits and standard representation agreements.

Certification is a baseline of accountability: the agent has agreed to follow the association’s rules and can be disciplined if they don’t.

Contract negotiation

The core of the job is negotiating the player’s contract with the club. That includes researching comparable contracts, understanding the league’s collective bargaining agreement and salary rules, and structuring terms like guarantees, bonuses and incentives. The goal is not only the biggest number but the best overall deal for the player’s situation.

Career guidance

A good agent helps a player think beyond a single contract. That can include preparing for the draft or free agency, evaluating team fits, and planning for life after the playing career.

Marketing and endorsements

Many agents also help players find and evaluate endorsement, appearance and media opportunities. These deals have their own contracts and risks, which is where combining representation with legal review can be valuable.

Coordinating the team

Players often work with financial advisors, trainers, public relations professionals and family members. An agent frequently acts as a point of coordination, making sure everyone is working toward the same goals.

How to check an agent

Each players association provides ways for players to confirm whether an agent is currently certified. Before signing a representation agreement, verify certification directly with the association, read the agreement carefully and ask how fees are calculated.
